The new literary department at Deafinitely Theatre is now accepting scripts from all writers both deaf and hearing. The remit for plays considered by the company is a simple one; A good story that is accessible to all, highly imaginative and lends itself to the visual interpretation of storytelling that is the trademark of Deafinitely Theatre’s work.
Whereas before the company has focused on plays written only from a deaf perspective, we have realized that in order to move forward and embrace the world of new writing with no bias, it’s important to broaden our horizons and accept work that we feel suits our style of work – this means your script will need to have the qualities that ensure adaptation into British Sign Language is possible. Plays that are dialogue heavy for example will not be as accessible as plays that are less wordy, relying more on the visual.
If a play is selected by the Literary Department as one that could be translated effectively into BSL, then it will be passed onto the Artistic Director for consideration. The writer will then be asked to attend an informal chat about the piece. This chat will work on two levels – for the writer to meet the company and get an idea about how we work, and also to work out a way in which we can proceed with the project, if that is indeed the way in which both parties wish to go.
These are early stages of this brand new department but it is something that we are extremely excited about and through this new opportunity we hope to discover writers of any age and of any creed who believe they have a piece of work that fits beautifully into Deafinitely Theatre’s theatrical vision.
